HIDE

Master tanners select hides from the way they look and the way they feel to the touch.
For the tanning process, tannins are used – that is barks, wood, leaf extracts from several plants to stop the hide from altering without modifying its structure.
Aniline dyes are used to colour the hides, which are then tumbled to soften them.
At this point the hides that have been placed in the tumbling drums (cylindrical recipients that rotate on their axis) for at least twelve hours under suitable humidity and temperature conditions, reach the right softness so that protective products such as casein, resin or beeswax can be applied.
